Market Summary:
In this video, I review the market positives and negatives. The biggest positive is the improving price action in the major indexes. The Nasdaq Composite had a Day 6 follow through day (FTD) last Friday, January 6th and had an additional FTD today, January 11th. It pulled back on light volume on Monday and Tuesday of this week and held its 21-day (all positive signs). The other major indexes are back above many key moving averages, but we still need the S&P 500 to get through its 200-day. This has been an area of resistance for the past year. As far as stocks, it’s a mixed picture. I review some stocks that are breaking out and holding, but there are others that are failing. My conclusion is that the price action of stocks is improving, but we’re still not seeing enough consistency.
The main negative is the hawkish Fed. We will get more clarity about future rate hikes after tomorrow morning’s CPI (inflation) report. If the report shows higher than expected inflation, it will be interesting to see how the market reacts. If inflation comes in light, I will be watching if we can get through that 200-day, or if the rally the past few days is a “buy the rumor, sell the news” event. Either way, I am remaining defensive until we get more clarity. I have increased my exposure from 10% to 20% and I’m still keeping my positions lighter than normal. If the economic numbers are favorable and the institutions continue to come back into this market, there will be plenty of time to make money during a SUSTAINED uptrend. Just a reminder that this Weekend’s Video will be posted by Sunday, January 15th at 6PM EST instead of the normal Saturday time due the Monday holiday here in the US. Thank you and good luck for the remainder of the week.
