Market Summary:
As you know, I like to analyze the market with an open-minded approach. I look at the positives and the negatives, and adjust my investment levels accordingly. Current negatives: 1) Three distribution days this week on the Nasdaq Composite. 2) The major indexes are below their 50-day moving averages. 3) Many Mega-Caps are starting to break down. Current positives: 2) The Fed is still providing a low interest rate environment. 2) We’re heading into Q4, which is traditionally strong. 3) There are still many stocks holding up well, which I review in this video.
So, what to do from here? Whenever there are mixed signals, there’s nothing wrong with being cautious until we get a clearer picture. I’m not sure if the selling this week is the start of a bigger correction, or just some end-of-the-quarter portfolio adjustments. I came into the week fully invested, and then mentioned in my Tuesday Memo that I reduced down to 80% invested. Today, I reduced even more. If you are on margin and looking to reduce exposure, you can do it by either cutting position sizes, or stopping yourself out of any positions that are breaking below their 50-day. On the stocks that are close to their 50-day, you can wait until the end of the week to see if they recover, or sell half depending on your risk tolerance. If you have a large cash position and your are looking to nibble, I present many stocks that are holding up well or near support. Either way, there’s nothing wrong with being defensive and using lighter than normal positions until we get a clearer picture. Good luck for the remainder of the week!
