I always like to keep an open mind when I approach the market. I look at the positives and the negatives and adjust my investment levels accordingly. Right now, you could make a decent case for being bullish or being cautious. The positives include: the leaders are acting well, the Fed and the global central banks are pumping tons of liquidity into this market, many people are bearish, and there’s very little distribution. The negatives include: we could be due for a pullback after such a strong run, there’s some short-term bullishness based on the equity only put/call numbers, the news cycle will shift away from fundamentals to bullshit, and we could see some end of the month profit taking.
How I deal with a market that gives mixed signals is to meet half way. I have shifted over the past week from being invested in the 50-80% range down to 30-50% invested. That way, if we go higher, I can hopefully still participate, and if we go lower, I hopefully won’t get hit too much. Again, these decisions should be based on your OWN objectives. My personal objective is to do a better job of locking in profits for clients. Your decisions should be based on your own plan and objective. My goal is to encourage people to make decisions, start small if you have to, and build up confidence. As always, I will take this day by day and adjust my levels based on market conditions.
