Market Summary:
The price action this week was strong. The big up day on the Nasdaq Composite occurred on heavy volume, and the light “pause” days around it were on lighter volume. I also liked how the Nasdaq Composite and Russell 2000 were up better than the S&P 500 for the week, as the former two indexes tend to be a sign of “risk on” when money is being put into growth and small cap names. There are still some negatives out there: 1) The major indexes are extended from their 21-days. 2) With earnings season coming to an end soon, the news cycle will shift to geopolitics, interest rates, and all sorts of nonsense that will lead to higher volatility. 3) August and September are traditionally two of the weaker months of the year.
The biggest negative that I don’t want members to overlook is that the Fed is STILL raising rates. Friday’s Jobs Report came in hotter than expected and a few Fed members were out over the weekend pushing for a 75 basis point rate hike. We also have to get through this Wednesday’s inflation (CPI) report, which could solidify two more rate hikes if it comes in hot. My point is DO NOT get complacent right now. The market is acting better, but we are certainly not out of the woods. I remain approximately 50% invested and might reduce exposure a little more early in the week, as I am expecting a pullback to the 21-day over the next week or two. As always, make decisions based on your own plan. If you have any questions, you can ask them during the next webinar which will be this Sunday, August 7th at 11AM EST. Thank you and enjoy the remainder of your weekend.
