Market Summary:
Since we had the follow through day on the Nasdaq Composite in late March, the index has performed well and got back close to its highs in the first 7 trading days of April. In addition, the S&P 500 broke out in early April and continues to grind higher. So, the indexes are acting very well but it hasn’t been smooth sailing for individual stocks. Many names continue to chop around but the sector rotation is keeping the indexes propped up. For example, on Tuesday, Semiconductors corrected while Software moved higher, and on Wednesday, technology corrected while small caps performed well.
So, how do we interpret this price action and deal with the choppiness beneath the surface? Be patient. I discuss in this video a few strategies. 1) You can keep a blend of Index ETFs and some growth stocks. 2) If you prefer individual stocks, you can keep a diverse blend of MegaCaps, Semis, Retail, Steel, etc. 3) If you keep a concentrated group of stocks, get a strong entry point and be patient as long as the price action is normal. Either way, strong entry points are very important to help one deal with some choppiness.
Currently, the Nasdaq Composite and S&P 500 are extended from their 21-day moving averages. If you take any new positions, maybe use half the size in case the indexes have a quick pullback to their 21-days. If this happens, I don’t see any sustained downside and I would view it as a normal pullback. Also, stay focused on the best stocks out there. I know I present many different stocks and sectors, but I am doing it mainly for idea generation. Don’t fall into the trap of trying to own too many stocks. Good luck for the remainder of the week!
